Sheffield United v Arsenal, December 30, 2006

Gunners will be facing the blades for their return trip.

Arsène Wenger has been hit by a host of injuries and a virus ahead of the trip to Sheffield United.

Emmanuel Adebayor (thigh) and Johan Djourou (hamstring) picked up injuries in the 2-1 win at Watford on Boxing Day. Theo Walcott has a back problem while Alex Hleb hurt his shin in training on Friday. Meanwhile Thierry Henry (hamstring), Freddie Ljungberg (hamstring), William Gallas (thigh), Emmanuel Eboue (ankle) are still out.

In addition the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Jeremie Aliadiere, Alex Song and Julio Baptista have colds but they are in the squad. As a consequence Denilson and Lauren are likely to be on the bench for the first time in the Premiership this season.

Watford 1-2 Arsenal - Match report

A well-crafted 83rd minute goal from Robin van Persie gave Arsenal all three points at Watford on Boxing Day — but Arsène Wenger’s side were made to work all the way.Gilberto nodded the visitors in front after 19 minutes however the lead lasted only four minutes as Tommy Smith swept home from close range. Both sides had chances after that but by far the greater quality came from Arsenal. Watford keeper Ben Foster added to his blossoming reputation on one of his busier afternoons.Desperation was just starting to take hold when Theo Walcott sent Van Persie sprinting through on the right. He cut inside Jay DeMerit and curled a left-foot effort into the far corner. It is fast becoming his trademark strike.

It certainly extracted Arsenal from a difficult situation this afternoon. This was a forget-the-performance and look-at-the-result kind of game. They move back up to third in the Premiership table.Arsenal were unchanged from the side that had beaten Blackburn so handsomely at Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The retention of Alex Hleb and Tomas Rosicky for an away game suggested Wenger intended to ‘outpass’ the Premiership’s bottom side.Vicarage Road is tight, traditional football stadium. Its devotees expected maximum effort and energy from the side, even though it had brought them precious few points until now.

In addition, Watford are favourites to go down this season while Wenger claims Arsenal are still gunning for the title. Throw in the traditional fervour of a Boxing Day fixture and you had the recipe for a bit of a Christmas cracker. And that is the way it turned out. After three minutes Hameur Bouazza stormed down the left, cut inside Johan Djourou and forced an early save. By way of reply Van Persie forced a fine shot from Watford keeper Ben Foster at the near post.Dan Shittu nodded wide from a corner but, midway through the half, Arsenal had taken control of the game and, with it, the lead. They created a gaggle of chances. Foster made a replica save, only this time from Fabregas. Watford could not clear the ball and Van Persie rifled a shot beyond the far post. The Dutchman then volleyed viciously at Foster and the on-loan Manchester United keeper made a fine low save. However Van Persie had tugged Jay DeMerit in order to get the shot away.In the 18th minute Djourou erred and Ashley Young slipped through. Fortunately, Gilberto was on sentry duty and slid in to smother the shot at source. Seconds later the Brazilian put Arsenal ahead.Rosicky flung a corner to the near post, Toure touched it on and the unmarked midfielder hammered home a header from close range. It seemed that Arsenal would kick on from here. However, almost immediately, Young’s optimistic yet well-flighted flick forced the backtracking Lehmann to palm the ball aside. Then in the 23rd minute Bouazza fled down the left and another Toure touch diverted the ball to Smith eight-yards out. The former England Under-21 striker swept the ball past Lehmann with gusto.

Understandably the home fans were buoyed by the goal but the visitors came back strong before the break. They never broke through the home defence but their constant probing stretched their every sinew. In the 33rd minute Toure clipped the ball through and the leaping Adebayor sent a swivelling shot high over the bar. Then Van Persie powered through on the left but Foster cut out his low cross in the six-yard box. In the dying seconds Fabregas drove forward on left but slashed his shot well wide. However the final chance fell to Alhassan Bangura who thumped a snapshot just past Lehmann’s left-hand upright.Senderos replaced Djourou at the break and Arsenal re-doubled their efforts after the re-start. Rosicky outpaced his marker on the left and forced a flying save from Foster at the near post. The Czech midfielder then tried to feed the galloping Adebayor but Shittu slid in expertly on the edge of the area and managed to clear the danger.

However the impetus was soon lost. Watford had been dangerous from set-pieces through the game and forced a flurry of corners around the hour. But Arsenal weathered the storm and in the 64th minute Fabregas sent Adebayor clear. He beat his marker and his low shot hit Foster’s legs. The Watford keeper knew little about that save however his stop from Justin Hoyte’s left-foot drive was excellent.Arsenal were going for the win. Clichy dribbled through and fired over just after Theo Walcott came on. Then Julio Baptista trickled an effort inches beyond the far post a minute after his arrival.Adebayor hacked an effort wide then, after Gilberto cleared a corner, Walcott found Van Persie wonderfully. The Dutchman found the far corner in a similar manner. Baptista nearly gave Walcott his first Arsenal goal on a plate at the death but it wasn't to be.

Nonetheless, a little bit of quality, along with a whole heap of grit, had been just enough to take all three points.

RVP : The Young star of Arsenal

A video compilation of the young Dutch gunner.

Player Profile: 11. Robin Van Persie

Robin van Persie (born August 6, 1983 in Rotterdam) is a Dutch footballer currently playing at English FA Premier League team Arsenal as a striker. He can play as a striker (as he normally does for Arsenal) or on either wing, as he primarily does for the Netherlands.

Van Persie began his career as a youth player for Dutch side Excelsior Rotterdam and later Feyenoord Rotterdam, earning caps in the process for Netherlands U19 and U21 teams. His performances with Feyenoord, including his playing an integral part in the 3-2 UEFA Cup final victory over Borussia Dortmund at the De Kuip on May 8, 2002, earned him the prestigious Best Young Talent award given by the KNVB for the 2001-02 season.

As a result of a back injury suffered during the summer of 2002, there was uncertainty as to whether Van Persie could start the new season. Van Persie, however, showed no such worries come the beginning of the season, scoring 8 goals in 28 league games as well as playing twice in the UEFA Champions League. Despite his talent Robin Van Persie had a difficult relationship with the Feyenoord manager Bert van Marwijk, a strict discipliniarian, who sent him home on the eve of the European Super Cup against Real Madrid in Monaco.

With Van Persie's Feyenoord contract due to expire in 2005, a disagreement with Bert van Marwijk combined with the fact that the club had not offered him a new contract meant that he spent most of the following season as a fading light at the club.

English Premiership

English club Arsenal, undeterred by a rebuff during the January 2004 transfer window, made a move for the striker at the end of the 2003-04 season. Van Persie also emerged as a target for Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen, and Spanish side Sevilla. However Arsenal fended off other club interest and signed van Persie, despite already having signed Spanish striker José Antonio Reyes from Sevilla. Van Persie completed his move for a fee believed to be in the range of £3 million, to the Premiership on May 17, 2004. Praised by Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger for the strength of his talent, he made his debut for the team in the 3-1 FA Community Shield victory over rivals Manchester United on August 8, 2004. Early on, he played as a left winger, but he predominantly plays as a striker for Arsenal. He is touted as Arsenal's long-term replacement for his idol Dennis Bergkamp.

He spent most of his time on the bench during earlier parts of the season and looked to have earned himself a permanent place there with his sending off against Southampton which cost Arsenal two points, and caused Wenger to display uncharacteristic anger in public with a player. To his credit, Van Persie redoubled his efforts in training during his suspension and was reintroduced in to the team when injuries to Thierry Henry forced Wenger's hand. His return to the first team has been marked with numerous goals, the pinnacle of his achievements (at that time) coming in the FA Cup semi-final against Blackburn Rovers where he scored two goals to secure victory for Arsenal. He also scored the vital breakthrough goal against West Bromwich Albion to help Arsenal secure second place in the Premiership after the Albion defence had proved difficult to break down. As a result of his good play he won the The Barclay's Premiership Player of the Month.

Van Persie scored in the first game of the 2005-06 season and he continued to show good form, winning the prestigious Player of the Month award in November after scoring six goals in just four starts. So far he has tended to be deployed in an advanced left-wing role in a 4-5-1 formation, rather than as a second striker alongside Thierry Henry, where he had previously established himself for Arsenal. He signed a contract extension keeping him at the North London club until 2011. In the early part of the 2006-07 season, against Charlton Athletic, he scored what turned out to be BBC's Goal of the Month, an airborne volley from the edge of the 18-yard box. Arsène Wenger described it as 'technically perfect'. These and his international performances for his country earned him the title Rotterdam Sportsman of the year 2006.

Robin Van Persie received his first full international cap against Romania on 4th June 2005. Despite not being an automatic first choice to start for Arsenal, Van Persie was selected as one of Holland's forwards for the 2006 FIFA World Cup by national coach Marco Van Basten. His first World Cup goal came in the group match against Côte d'Ivoire, a blistering free kick in the 23rd minute. Despite the Netherlands premature exit out of the world elite competition, Van Persie has forced himself into the first eleven following impressive displays in Germany

During the Euro 2008 qualifiers, van Persie made an instant impact during games against Luxembourg and Belarus. Despite an unconvincing 1-0 win against the central European minnows, Luxembourg, Van Persie was a constant threat surging forwards throughout the match. Yet his performance against the Belarussians surely illustrated why van Basten has handed him the coveted number 7 shirt. Two perfectly struck goals in either halves and a clinical cross to feed Dirk Kuyt helped the Netherlands claim a comfortable 3-0 win. He continued his great form in the next two games, scoring against Bulgaria in a 1-1 draw and also in the 2-1 victory against Albania a few days later.

Van Persie's mother is a teacher and his father an artist. His father brought him up as a single parent. He grew up in a rough neighbourhood of Rotterdam alongside its large immigrant population. He had a series of behavioral problems at school and was often excluded from classes. He is married to Bouchra, a Dutch-Moroccan. They have one child together, a boy named Shaqeel, born on November 16th, 2006. They live in Hampstead, North London. While some sources claim he is a convert to Islam, Van Persie has never disclosed his faith in interviews.

Match Report : Arsenal 6 - 2 Blackburn Rovers

Arsenal got their festive schedule off to the perfect start with a 6-2 thrashing of Blackburn at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners may be trailing Manchester United and Chelsea in the race for the Barclays Premiership title but there were glimpses of what this current crop of talented Gunners can produce as they recovered from conceding an early penalty to complete a comprehensive win. With games against struggling Watford, Sheffield United and Charlton all to come over the next 10 days, there could just be signs 2007 may well turn out to be a vintage year for Arsenal.

It was Rovers, however, who took a shock early lead.Shabani Nonda played in former Gunner David Bentley, who was tussling arm to arm with Kolo Toure and the pair went to ground.Referee Howard Webb was convinced there had been enough contact from the Arsenal defender - who appeared to fall into the path of his old team-mate - and pointed to the spot.Congo striker Nonda, on loan from Roma, confidently stroked the penalty low to the right of Jens Lehmann.Arsenal found themselves trailing to an early goal at home again, and immediately went on the offensive.Robin van Persie drove Emmanuel Adebayor's cut-back from the left just wide of the near post. After 10 minutes, Toure's flicked header looped off the crossbar following a corner on the left.Moments later, the Gunners were level. Van Persie sent over a delivery from the opposite flag - and Gilberto got up above marker Brett Emerton to head past Brad Friedel.Arsenal soon settled into their natural passing game but, after 16 minutes, Lehmann had to be alert to touch over a dipping 30-yard strike from Bentley, the young forward perhaps out to prove a point to his old manager. The Gunners then went ahead with a brilliantly-worked goal from Alexander Hleb. Cesc Fabregas slipped the ball through to Adebayor on the edge of the Blackburn area, and he in turn fed Hleb. The Belorussian midfielder danced around Andy Todd, and then simply rolled the ball past Friedel. Before Rovers had time to regroup, it was 3-1. A delightful flick from Adebayor sent van Persie clear into the six-yard box ahead of Lucas Neill, who promptly pulled him down - although the Dutchman made the most of the contact.Referee Webb pointed to the spot, before then consulting with his assistant as the visitors protested for offside. His decision stood, however, before the Yorkshire official then showed leniency and produced only a yellow card for the Blackburn skipper, when according to the letter of the law it should really have been red.Punishment enough was served, though, when Adebayor netted from 12 yards as he sent Friedel the wrong way after 27 minutes. As half-time approached, Arsenal produced a lightning counter-attack. Tomas Rosicky's quick pass sent Hleb clear down the right, before the midfielder cut inside. However, instead of opting to shoot as space opened up in the box, he tried to square for the on-rushing van Persie - and Todd was able to make a timely interception.Just before the break, there was a warning when Lehmann again had to be at full stretch to save another well-hit, long-range effort from Bentley.

Arsenal looked in control at the start of the second half, and Cesc Fabregas twice went close. His low drive deflected off Neill and went only just wide of Friedel's right-hand post, before the Rovers keeper then did well to deny Fabregas at the near post after the midfielder had cut in from the left as the offside flag stayed down.Arsenal were within inches of moving further ahead when Adebayor's cut-back from the goalline was drilled in by Rosicky - but somehow Andre Ooijer managed to head the ball up against the underside of the crossbar and it flew away to safety.Rovers made a change when Michael Gray was replaced by Matt Derbyshire on 63 minutes - and the substitution soon paid off.A deep cross from the right by Emerton looped over the Arsenal back-line. Derbyshire's diving far-post header bounced back off the bar into the six-yard box - where Nonda was on hand to hook it into the net.Arsenal suddenly looked nervous at the back, with Lehmann turning Morten Gamst Pedersen's snap-shot over with nine minutes left.Van Persie could have made the game safe - but side-footed over from Adebayor's cut-back on the right goalline. The Dutchman then did wrap things up, turning Bentley inside out on the right before dispatching a low strike into the far corner on 85 minutes.Adebayor and Fabregas combined to set-up van Persie for a fifth, before substitute Mathieu Flamini swept in another from close range during stoppage time.

• Wenger hails six-goal Gunners

Arsene Wenger claimed his Arsenal team had played some 'amazing football' during their 6-2 thrashing of Blackburn at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners recovered from going behind to a third-minute penalty to secure a comfortable victory against Mark Hughes' men, who remain in a scrap at the wrong end of the Barclays Premiership table.Rovers had taken a shock lead on through Shabani Nonda, after Kolo Toure was adjudged to have brought down former Arsenal forward David Bentley. However, Gilberto soon levelled before a brilliantly worked goal from Alexander Hleb put the hosts ahead.Emmanuel Adebayor's spot-kick made it 3-1 before half-time.Although another for Nonda with 20 minutes left looked to have set up a nervous finish, Robin van Persie wrapped the game up with a late double before substitute Mathieu Flamini completed the rout in stoppage time.'Blackburn played and were dangerous going forwards, but I am happy because it was a spirited performance and created some combination play at speed which was absolutely amazing,' said Arsenal manager Wenger.'It is never boring here.'You cannot accuse me a lot, but not of making it boring.'The team played some tremendous and amazing football to watch today.'Blackburn also did well going forwards today and in the end they were punished perhaps a little bit too much.'Wenger added: 'I knew if we could survive their spell of pressure, then we would come out again.'If they had come back to 3-3, that would have been very hard for the team mentally to have dropped two points with the way we played.'The Arsenal manager is convinced his side can go places in 2007.'I have already said I believe we can achieve something this season, but it is down to consistency,' Wenger continued.'We have now put a good little run together and it is just how consistent we can be.'There is great spirit in the team and they enjoy playing together at a high tempo, that is something amazing and very interesting to watch.'They are developing well and the vibes coming out of the team are very positive.'I have a great belief they can go further.

Arsenal v/s Blackburn Rovers 23rd December 2006

Rovers come to the Emirates stadium this staurday standing in the last quarter of the table. And meeting a side in the top quarter is never easy to win or rather to even draw at their home. But things were not the same for the 1995 premiership champions last season who finished 6th. The game starts the festive season for both the teams with gunners palying 4 games in the next ten days. Tomas Rosicky is sure to have a start after three weeks out with injury. Right back Eboue is set to miss the game with injury and Flamini is also doubtful. Making return after eleven months Lauren will also not be starting instead Justin Hoyte will be given a start. Ljungberg is also out with a hamstring injury for three weeks along with Gallas out for one may be two more weeks.

Tony Adams "Mr. Arsenal"

Tony Alexander Adams MBE (born 10 October 1966) is an English former football player who is currently assistant manager of Portsmouth. He spent his entire playing career (22 years) at Arsenal, and is one of the club's greatest players of all time.

Adams was born in Romford in the London Borough of Havering and, joined Arsenal as a schoolboy in 1980. He made his first team debut on November 5, 1983, at the age of 17 against Sunderland. Together with Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn and Steve Bould, Adams was part of the "famous four" that lined up in Arsenal's defence, which under George Graham was renowned for its well disciplined use of the offside trap. On January 1, 1988, he became Arsenal's youngest ever captain at the age of 21; he remained club captain for the next 14 years.

Their strong defence was a huge factor in Arsenal winning the League Cup in 1986-87 then the First Division trophy in 1988-89 and 1990-91. In 1992-93 Adams became the first player to captain his side to a League Cup and FA Cup double, lifting the European Cup Winners' Cup the year after.

Despite this success, alcohol problems increasingly blighted his life as he was reportedly often involved in fights in night clubs, was fined for driving in a drunken state several times before being imprisoned for three months after being caught drink-driving in 1990. After Euro 96, Adams admitted that he was an alcoholic and, after seeking treatment, found a more sensitive side to his character, which included a return to education and an attempt to learn the piano. He is one of the most high-profile recovering alcoholics in the UK - his battle with alcohol is heavily detailed in his autobiography, Addicted, which was released in May 1998 to enormous critical acclaim.

His recovery and rehabilitation were helped in no small part by the arrival of Arsène Wenger as Arsenal manager in September 1996, who reformed the club's dietary practices and the players' lifestyles. Wenger stuck by Adams following his confessions about his drink problem, and the improvements in the regime probably extended Adams's career by several years. Adams rewarded his manager's understanding handsomely, captaining the club to two Premiership and FA Cup Doubles, in 1997-98 and 2001-02; he is the only player in English football history to have captained a League-winning team in three different decades.

After his second Double win in 2002, Adams retired from professional football altogether, his last match being the 2002 FA Cup Final. He played 668 matches for Arsenal (only David O'Leary has played more) and was the most successful captain in the club's history. The number 6 shirt that Adams wore when playing was not used from his retirement at the end of 2001/2002 to the end of the 2005/2006 season, but Philippe Senderos recently acquired this number. Nicknamed "Mr. Arsenal", he was honoured by Arsenal with a testimonial game against Celtic in May 2002 with many Arsenal legends playing, including Ian Wright, John Lukic and Adams' fellow back four stalwarts, Dixon, Winterburn and Bould. The game finished 1-1 with Lee Dixon, in his final appearance for the Gunners, getting their goal.

In 2004, Adams was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his impact on the English game.

Player Profile: Luis Garcia

Luis Javier García Sanz (born June 24, 1978 in Badalona, Catalonia, Spain), commonly known as Luis García, is a Spanish football player. He currently plays for Liverpool F.C. and wears the number 10 jersey. His favourite form of celebration is sucking his thumb. This is dedicated to his first-born son, Joel

Luis García played for FC CD Tenerife, Atlético Madrid, FC Barcelona and Real Valladolid, in La Liga. Normally, Luis García is employed in the "hole" position behind the striker and in front of the midfielders. He quickly earned a reputation in England as a player of remarkable skills, but this talent was qualified by his tendency to lose the ball in dangerous positions. His ability to kick confidently with both feet makes him an extremely versatile attacker, deployable on both flanks, as well as behind strikers. Despite his small frame, he has also shown a great ability to head the ball, with some of his most impressive goals coming in the air.

Luis García was signed by Rafael Benítez for Liverpool in August 2004 for a fee of £6 million (Benítez coached him when they were at Tenerife together). He was bought essentially as a cut-price replacement for El Hadji Diouf, in the attacking midfield role. He has proved much more than a stand-in, and has become a key component of Liverpool's attacking unit. He made his Premiership debut against Bolton Wanderers on 29 August 2004.

He was also a key player in Liverpool's successful 2005 Champions League campaign, netting the winning goals against Juventus (an unstoppable left footed shot which curled over Gianluigi Buffon, one of the best goals in the competition) and Chelsea (a controversial goal in the fourth minute), in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively. He took part in the Champions league final victory over A.C. Milan on 25 May 2005, finishing with an excellent 13 goals in all competitions in his first season in English football.

García did not make so much of an impact in the 2005-06 season, although he has weighed in with some vital goals, not least the impressive, lofted finish against Chelsea to put them out of the FA Cup in the semi-finals.

Garcia ranked 24th in the 100 Players Who Shook The Kop online poll, with Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Robbie Fowler the only current squad players ranked higher.

Replacing Anfield star Michael Owen as Liverpool 'number 10' was always going to be tough for a new signing, and despite an inconsistent first season, García firmly became a fan favourite. While many consider him as a frustrating player for losing the ball often, they recognised his ability as a match-winner. His positive relationship with the fans is further underlined by the song frequently sung in his honour, to the tune of "You Are My Sunshine".

"Luis García, He drinks Sangria, He came from Barça, To bring us joy, He's five foot seven, He's football heaven, So please don't take our Luis away"

He is Liverpools heighest ever goal scorer in the champions league (current format) .

Player Profile: 12. Bisan Lauren

Laureano Bisan-Etame Mayer (born January 19, 1977 in Londi Kribi, Cameroon), more commonly known as Lauren, is a Cameroonian footballer of Equatoguinean origin, who currently plays for English Premier League team Arsenal.

Lauren was born in Cameroon as his parents fled Equatorial Guinea due to the political persecution during the dictatorship of Francisco Macías Nguema. Then the family moved to Seville, where he was raised. He started his career in Spain, playing for Utrera , Seville B, Levante, and RCD Mallorca. He qualifed for dual nationality through residency and as a Spaniard he is exempt from the post-Bosman ruling regulation that restricts the number of non-EU players to three per team in UEFA competition matches even though he is a Cameroonian international.

Lauren came to Arsenal in the summer of 2000 for a fee of £7,200,000. Lauren provided cover for both midfield or defence He made his Arsenal debut against Sunderland on August 19, 2000. However his first season in English football season was blighted by injuries. Although at first Lauren was unable to gain a regular place in the Arsenal side, he eventually ended up becoming the club's first-choice right back, replacing veteran Lee Dixon (and leapfrogging Ukrainian international Oleh Luzhny in the process). By the time Arsenal had won the Double in 2001-02, Lauren was an integral part of the Arsenal defence.

In 2002-03, Lauren suffered a calf injury and again missed part of the season, but nevertheless recovered in time and won an FA Cup winners medal that season, as Arsenal beat Southampton 1-0.

Lauren was a consistent member of the Arsenal first team during 2003-04, but his season was marred by his verbal abuse towards Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy after van Nistelrooy had missed a penalty late on in the match between the two sides at Old Trafford. Lauren was banned by the Football Association for four matches and fined £40,000. Nevertheless, he made his 150th appearance for Arsenal during this season, as Arsenal won the Premier League title unbeaten, giving Lauren his second League winners' medal.

Lauren won a third FA Cup winners' medal in 2005, as Arsenal beat Manchester United on penalties after a 0-0 draw in the final; Lauren scored the first of Arsenal's spot-kicks. However, during 2005-06, Lauren suffered a knee injury midway through, he did not play for the rest of the season and is now returning in the Carling Cup Quarter Finals against Liverpool.

Lauren is Arsenal's Mr Reliable, a tough-tackling defender and a valuable outlet on the right flank with the versatility to fill in at left-back or in midfield if required.

One of the Club's most experienced players, Lauren has won two Premiership titles and three FA Cups during his six years at Arsenal. He has also earned a reputation as a nerveless penalty taker, netting vital spot-kicks in two North London derbies and another in the 2005 FA Cup Final win over Manchester United.

International Career:

During the 1997-98 season, whilst he was playing at Levante, Cameroonian goalkeeping legend Thomas N'Kono learnt of his selectability by Cameroon due to his birth. He was invited to join the squad that played in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and rose to the challenge. Lauren earn't his first full international cap for Cameroon in May 1998 against Luxembourg. Unfortunately his debut in the tournament as a substitute was blighted by one of the fastest sending offs in the history of the World Cup, when in his first challenge for the ball he was shown a red card, thus ending his World Cup campaign.

Better times were ahead though, playing in the Cameroon team that won the 2000 African Nations Cup. He also played in the gold winning team at the 2000 Olympics, ironically against Spain who could have selected him were not for his choice of Cameroon.

This success was repeated when the team won the 2002 African Nations Cup; Cameroon beat Senegal on penalties after a 0-0 draw. Lauren scored in the penalty shootout. He also played in the 2002 FIFA World Cup group stages, featuring in all three of Cameroon's group matches, but his side failed to qualify for the knockout stage. He retired from international football in 2002, having won 25 caps for his country.

Lauren is a regular pundit alongside Guillem Balague and Roberto Martínez on Sky Sports' La Liga programme, Revista de la Liga.

Lauren is an avid boxer and enjoys sparring in his spare time.He lives in Radlett, Hertfordshire and has one child.

Player Profile: 1. Jens Lehmann "Mad Jens"

Jens Gerhard Lehmann (born November 10, 1969 in Essen) is a German football goalkeeper who currently plays for Arsenal of the English Premier League and the German national team.

Lehmann started his career in 1989 with Schalke 04, playing for them for nearly a decade. His first years were rocky, his nadir an infamous 45-minute stint against Bayer Leverkusen in 1993 in which he conceded three howler goals and was subbed after 45 minutes, causing him to flee the stadium alone by tram rather than taking the team bus, but gradually established himself as a strong keeper lauded for his ability to intercept crosses.

Lehmann became the Ruhr Valley club's hero in their 1997 UEFA Cup final victory over Internazionale, after playing a strong season and saving an Ivan Zamorano penalty in a penalty shootout.

He left Schalke for A.C. Milan in 1998, but did not play well and was dropped after just five matches. He returned to Germany to play for Borussia Dortmund, winning the Bundesliga in 2001-2002. A fiery personality with a poor disciplinary record, he holds the Bundesliga record for the number of sendings-off for a goalkeeper.

Lehmann joined Arsenal on July 25, 2003 as a replacement for David Seaman, and played every match as Arsenal went unbeaten for the entire '03-04 FA Premier League campaign, becoming the first English club to accomplish this feat since the 1880s. However, Lehmann's confident, aggressive style of play, often coming out of his goal to intercept passes occasionally led to mistakes, such as in the title-winning match at local rivals Tottenham Hotspur when Lehmann pushed Tottenham striker Robbie Keane as the pair waited for a Tottenham corner, and made mistakes that led to both goals in Arsenal's Champions League defeat at home to Chelsea the same season.

By the middle of the 2004-05 season, Lehmann was no longer automatic first-choice, with Spaniard Manuel Almunia starting in several matches instead. However, Almunia made a series of mistakes himself, thus allowing Lehmann to regain his position. At the end of that season, as speculation again began to mount that he would be replaced over the summer, Lehmann cemented his position in the Arsenal goal with a man-of-the-match performance against Manchester United in the 2005 FA Cup final. He made several important saves and demonstrated great positional sense to keep the score 0-0 after extra time, and then crucially saved Paul Scholes' shot in the penalty shootout, which Arsenal won 5-4.

Lehmann had an outstanding 2005-06 season with Arsenal, making his 100th Premier League appearance for the club in their game against West Bromwich Albion on April 15, 2006. He was a key factor in his side's first-ever accession to the Champions League final; during their run Arsenal broke the record for the most consecutive clean sheets in the Champions League with ten, breaking the record of seven that Milan had set just one year before. That run formed the bulk of an 853-minute spell without conceding a goal, overtaking the CL record for an individual goalkeeper set by Edwin van der Sar.

Bayern Munich's Hasan Salihamidžić had been the last to net against Lehmann, in the 64th minute of a quarter-final first leg match on March 22, 2005; Lehmann kept a clean sheet in the second leg, and then a further seven during Arsenal's run in 2005-06 (Almunia played in the other three matches); the final clean sheet was earned in the semi-finals against Villarreal, after Lehmann saved an 89th minute Juan Román Riquelme penalty. Lehmann maintained his shutout run despite an ignominious end to his 2006 UEFA Champions League Final against FC Barcelona; with the score still at 0-0 he was sent off in the 18th minute for a professional foul after bringing down Samuel Eto'o, making him the first player to ever be sent off in a CL final, but it didn't stop him from being named the CL Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2005-06 season.

His remarkable run was finally ended on September 13, 2006 by Hamburger SV's Boubacar Sanogo, who scored a consolatory goal in the 89th minute of Arsenal's first group stage match of the 2006-07 CL season.

Theo Walcott - "His Career So Far"

Theo Walcott came on for injured Freddie Ljungberg in the sixth minute on saturday and gave 2 assists to bring back Arsenal into the game when arsenal was 2-0 down.
A look at Theo Walcott and his career so far.

Arsenal 2 - 2 Portsmouth : Match Report

Arsenal ensured their unbeaten record at the Emirates Stadium remainedintact - but had to again settle for a draw after coming from 2-0 down against Portsmouth.

With Liverpool leapfrogging both these teams into third place in the Barclays Premiership earlier this afternoon, the pressure was on.However, after Robin van Persie saw two close-range efforts saved by David James, the Gunners again found themselves chasing the game when Noe Pamarot headed Pompey in front during first-half stoppage time. A stunning effort from Matthew Taylor a minute after the restart put the visitors in total control. However, Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor was brought off the bench just before the hour and had soon pulled a goal back - before Gilberto equalised as the Gunners struck twice quickly themselves.Despite plenty of pressure during the closing stages, it was another afternoon of frustration for the home side and their manager Arsene Wenger.Arsenal started brightly and almost snatched an early lead.Following good work from Alexander Hleb down the right, Emmanuel Eboue's centre picked out van Persie in the six-yard box.The Dutchman's downwards header looked to be going in - only for a wrong-footed James to stick out a boot and make a brilliant reactionsave. The Gunners continued to press, but failed to find a telling pass around the Pompey penalty area.Arsenal were dominating, with Theo Walcott - who replaced injured Freddie Ljungberg on seven minutes - proving a handful. The England teenager dashed into the right side of the area before drilling a low ball across goal, which James deflected clear. On 23 minutes, the Pompey keeper pulled off a fine double save.First the former England man beat away Cesc Fabregas' low 25-yard drive, and then got up quickly to block Van Persie's follow-up at the far post.As the half-hour mark passed, Pompey finally enjoyed a decent spell of possession. However, the visitors failed to make the most of some promising build-up and several corners. As the first half drew to a close, neither team were able to keep possession for any decent spell. Then, in stoppage time, the visitors took the lead.A deep free-kick from the left from Matthew Taylor was flicked on by David Thompson. The ball came back off the inside of the post and Pamarot was on hand to head into an empty net.It did not best please Wenger, who had words with the match officials at half-time, just days after he was fined by the Football Association for his touchline bust-up with former West Ham boss Alan Pardew. No sooner had the Gunners coach sent his side out for the second half, than they were 2-0 down. The Arsenal defence failed to clear their lines - and the loose ball dropped to Taylor on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder, who scored a stunner against Everton last week, sent an exquisite left-foot strike back over Jens Lehmann and into the far corner. The home side immediately upped the tempo in an attempt to get back into the match. With talisman captain Thierry Henry watching from the stands because of a hamstring problem, any inspiration would have to come from another source. And with 35 minutes left, Arsenal turned to Adebayor - who had netted the winner at Wigan in midweek - with the big Togo striker replacing Jeremie Aliadiere. It was not long before that turned out to be an inspired substitution.Walcott got away down the right to send over a teasing low cross.Adebayor timed his run to perfection, arriving on queue at the penalty spot to lash the ball first-time past James on 58 minutes. Before Pompey had time to regroup, it was 2-2.Centre-back Kolo Toure charged forwards to unleash a stinging 25-yard drive, which James could only parry.Adebayor was first to the rebound, and cut the ball back across goal.It was only partially cleared, which allowed Walcott to tee-up skipper Gilberto and he drove the loose ball low into the bottom left corner from close range. Those two goals in as many minutes had turned the match on its head, with the Gunners faithful now in full voice - and the Pompey chimes silenced.Arsenal continued to look dangerous - and van Persie could have won it when he waltzed through the Portsmouth defence, only to stab a left-foot shot inches wide.

Arsene protests innocence

Arsene Wenger put on a brave face following another frustrating draw at the
Emirates Stadium against Portsmouth - during which the Arsenal manager was sent
to the stands by referee Steve Bennett for his protests at the interval.
The Gunners again found themselves chasing the game when Noe Pamarot headed
Pompey in front during first-half stoppage time.
A stunning effort from Matthew Taylor a minute after the restart put the
visitors in total control.
But Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor was brought off the bench just before the
hour and had soon pulled a goal back - before Gilberto equalised as the Gunners
struck twice in quick succession.
Despite plenty of pressure during the closing stages, the match ended all
square, with Wenger having to give his instructions to the technical area from a
few rows behind the bench.
The Arsenal boss said: 'It was because I complained for the free-kick just
before half-time.
'I said that it was not a free-kick. I think it was a foul on (Gael) Clichy.
'I cannot say too much more about that.
'It did not disturb me too much.'
Earlier this week Wenger was fined £10,000 by the Football Association for his
touchline bust-up with former West Ham boss Alan Pardew, and warned as to his
future conduct.
Wenger continued: 'I do not know if I am brave or not.
'I am not a guy who worries too much.'
The Arsenal boss quipped: 'What do you want me to go to jail?'
Wenger admitted his side had been slow to start this afternoon, although they
did create the better chances in the first half with Robin van Persie twice
denied by Pompey keeper David James.
Wenger said: 'We had some disappointing draws here at the start of the season
- but I cannot say that today because there was lots of quality and character in
the team today.
'For me, the team is taking off.
'We did not find our flow in the first half, but then we have shown a great
character and created chance after chance.
'Of course, with the number of points we have already dropped it is more
difficult to take, but I cannot complain about the way we played.'
Wenger feels midfielder Freddie Ljungberg will miss the whole of the hectic
festive season because of a hamstring injury, and revealed Adebayor was carrying
a calf problem which will keep him out of next week's Carling Cup quarter-final
against Liverpool - whose win at Charlton today lifted them up into third place
in the Barclays Premiership.
Pompey boss Harry Redknapp felt if his side could have held out for a while
longer, they may well have gone on to record a convincing win.
He said: 'We got two up and were in good shape. We had control of the game at
that stage.
'The crowd were getting frustrated and I just felt we needed to hang in there
for another five or 10 minutes and we would have been okay.
'The fans had been moaning and that was getting through to the players
because they could not string two passes together.
'The goal coming when it did gave them a big lift.
Redknapp added: 'But to come here and get a draw is a great point.
'When we went to Arsenal last year it was probably with the worst team I have
ever had in my life - we were 4-0 down at half-time and it could have been 10.
So it has been a bit of a turn around since then, thank God.'
The Pompey manager, meanwhile, revealed Portuguese midfielder Manuel Fernandes
had been 'feeling rough' - but was not selected because of the terms of the
package which brought him to Fratton Park, with a third successive start set to
trigger an automatic £12million purchase clause.
Redknapp said: 'I did not do the deal which brought him here.
'The problem for me is that the fee is £12million - and I do not want to pay
£12million.
'He was here today but genuinely did not feel well today.
'But I would not have played him anyway.
'It was not my idea, I just sort of inherited it.
'He is a young kid with good potential and I told him if the fee was right, I
would buy him - but I would not put my name to £12million.'

Arsenal humiliate the Manu striker . It starts with RVN giving a challenge to Vieira and making him fall as a result he attempts to kick him but does not actually do it but receives the red card nonetheless. RVN showed soem nice acting skills to make the refree do that. Then minutes later Martin Keown gives away a penalty and Nistlerooy comes to take it Lehmann distratcs him in his usual ways and RVN hits with all his power and .... misses it. Arsenal players are all around him making him feel like hell after that. Great video.....

Portsmouth out of strikers

All four of Redknapp's front-men are injured with three already ruled out of the Christmas matches.

And the latest victim Kanu, the Premiership's joint top-scorer with nine goals, faces missing out on an emotional return against his old club with the knee injury he sustained in last week's 2-0 win over Everton.

With former England ace Andrew Cole (Achilles), Congo star Lomana LuaLua (thigh) both under long-term treatment, and Zimbabwe's Benjani Mwaruwari out with a pulled hamstring, Redknapp desperately hopes Kanu can overcome his injury.

Player Profile: Nwankwo Kanu

Nwankwo Kanu (born August 1, 1976 in Owerri, Nigeria), usually known simply as Kanu, is a professional footballer who plays as a striker for the Nigerian national team and for the English club Portsmouth. He is the most highly-decorated African footballer in footballing history, with over 10 awards to boast of.

Kanu began his career, aged fifteen, at First Division club Federation Works before moving to Iwuanyanwu Nationale in 1992.He made his Ajax debut in 1994 and went on to play 54 times for the Dutch side, scoring 25 goals. In the 1996 summer he captained the Nigerian team that won gold at the Olympics, famously scoring two late goals in the semi-finals against powerhouses Brazil to overturn a 2-3 scoreline into a 4-3 win in extra time. Kanu was also named African Footballer of the Year for that year.

However, soon after returning from the Olympics, Kanu underwent a medical examination at Inter, which revealed a serious heart defect; he underwent surgery in November 1996 to replace an aortic valve and did not return to his club until April 1997. In interviews, Kanu frequently cites his faith as a Christian, and has often mentioned this trying time of his career as an occasion when he prayed to God. Kanu's experience also led to his founding the Kanu Heart Foundation, an organisation that helps predominantly young African children who suffer heart defects. Kanu is known throughout Africa for his philanthropic work.

In February 1999, after just twelve games and one goal for Inter, Kanu was signed by Arsenal for approximately £4.2 million. His debut for Arsenal, against Sheffield United in the FA Cup, was a highly unusual match. With the score 1-1 and ten minutes to go, the United goalkeeper kicked the ball out of touch so that treatment could be given to an injured player. When the ball was thrown back into play by Ray Parlour, although it was intended for the United 'keeper, Kanu was unaware of the circumstances. Thinking it to be an attacking move, he chased the throw-in down the right wing unchallenged, and centred the ball for Marc Overmars, who promptly scored to make the match 2-1. Immediately after the match Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger offered to right the error and replay the match; in the end, Arsenal won that match 2-1 as well.

Despite the events overshadowing his debut, Kanu's career was quickly revived at Arsenal, especially after the departure of Nicolas Anelka in the summer of 1999. This prompted a new chant amongst Arsenal supporters: "Chim chiminy, chim chiminy, chim-chim chiroo, who needs Anelka when we've got Kanu?" (to the tune of the song from Mary Poppins). Kanu became known for scoring extravagant goals; against Tottenham Hotspur, with his back to goal he lobbed the ball over Luke Young's head, before turning the young defender and scoring. Other memorable goals included a hat-trick against Chelsea, in which one of the goals was scored from the goal line, to win a derby match 3-2 after being 2-0 down. Following his amazing performance the headline pun after the game was "Kanu believe it". He also scored a spectacular backheel flick against Middlesbrough and an amazing goal against Deportivo La Coruna, where given a one-on-one with the La Coruna goalkeeper, Kanu ran in a straight line towards the goal, completely fooling him in the process. He was named African Footballer of the Year for the second time in 1999, and in 1999-00 he scored 17 times in 50 matches for the Gunners.

However, Kanu's appearances for Arsenal gradually became less frequent, particularly after the emergence of Thierry Henry as Arsenal's first choice striker, when Kanu was mainly used as a substitute. Despite this, Kanu won the Double with Arsenal in 2002, an FA Cup in 2003 (as an unused sub) and the Premier League title in 2004. In all he played 197 games for Arsenal (nearly half of them as a substitute), scoring 44 goals. In the summer of 2004, after failing to get his contract with Arsenal extended, he moved to West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer.

One of the few highlights of the season in this time for Kanu came with the visit of his former club Arsenal to The Hawthorns on 15 October 2005. Philippe Senderos put the visitors ahead in the 17th minute, but Kanu equalised shortly before half time. West Brom went on to win the match 2-1

In the summer of 2006, Kanu played as a guest for Arsenal in Dennis Bergkamp's testimonial game, the first match to be played in Arsenal's new Emirates Stadium. The game was tied 1-1 when Kanu scored the winning goal, making him only the third person to score in the stadium. At the end of the match, Kanu joined the rest of the Arsenal side in hoisting the retired Dutchman on their shoulders as fans gave him a standing ovation.

Kanu was a free agent following his departure from West Brom, and he signed for Portsmouth F.C. shortly before the start of the 2006-7 season. Pompey had undergone a revival in the second half of the previous campaign, following the return of Harry Redknapp as manager, avoiding relegation by four points after being in serious danger at the turn of the year. At the start of the 2006-07 season, they were undefeated in their first five games, during which they did not concede a single goal.

Kanu's continued his impressive form in the following months; after 17 games he was the league's top scorer with 9 goals, 5 of them being headers.

Arsenal meet Portsmouth on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium. Half the season has gone now Pompey stands on a handome fourth place and gunners one above with a slender one point lead. the winner of this match will have an edge over the other in the table with the difference being so less. Pompey have a strong back line with David James between the bars and x-Arsenal center back Sol Campbell paired with Linvoy Primus in the centre with in-form Matthew Taylor at left back and on loan Chelsea right back Glen Jhonson. This defence did not concede for the first five games this season when pompey were on top of the table. They also have the former gunner Nwankwo Kanu as the top scorer in the league accompanied by either Lualua or Benjani.
For the gunners Gallas shud be back at the center of defence and Rosicky should also be back in the midfeild but as Wenger said " both have a small small chance of playing". Henry is now suffering with a hamstring injury and will not be back before Christmas.

The probable Arsenal line up:

Eboue-----Toure----Djourou------Clichy

----------------Gilberto--------------------

----------Fabregas --------Ljungberg-------

Wigan Athletic 0-1 Arsenal Match Report

Emmanuel Adebayor struck an 88th-minute winner at Wigan on Wednesday night to send Arsenal up to third in the Premiership and keep up the pressure on the top two to not lose points..

Just when both sides had begun to settle for a goalless draw, the Togolese striker who is now pefecting the art of scoring in the last minutes and clinch a victory from fruitless draw ,strode onto a throughball from Cesc Fabregas and planted a shot past the home sides posts.

The travelling fans sang “Ade-bayor” at the final whistle. After goals against Tottenham, Manchester United and now Wigan, the striker’s stock is rising at some pace.

Arsenal are set to play weekend-midweek until almost the end of January so it was no surprise to see Arsène Wenger rotate his squad. However slotting in Julio Baptista for his only his second Premiership start and Walcott for his third on the same night was a little more than expected.

In addition, Freddie Ljungberg and Toure came in. Philippe Senderos, Robin van Persie, Fabregas and Alex Hleb were the quartet to make way.

On the quarter-hour Flamini floated a clever cross to the far post and David Wright headed the ball over the bar with Adebayor in close attendance. Soon afterwards Clichy’s cross was intercepted just before it reached Ljungberg’s head.

However Wigan were to rally before the break. Toure cut down McCulloch’s charging run in its prime then Camara hacked a hopeful shot high over the bar.

Arsenal were efficient in repelling the hosts but failing to mount much in attack. Walcott’s raids down the right represented the best hope.

Within two minutes of the restart we had as many chances as in the whole of the opening 45.

In the 55th minute Gilberto fed Adebayor but the beanpole striker just failed to flick the ball past the advancing Wigan keeper.

A minute later Baptista sent Walcott through on the right. The 17-year-old chose not to go for goal and instead squared for Adebayor. The striker was challenged by Fitz Hall at the crucial moment and the neither made contact. Incredibly the ball trickled harmlessly across the area.

With 16 minutes left, Wenger brought on Fabregas and Van Persie for Baptista and Flamini.

Ten minutes from time, Van Persie spotted Ljungberg on the left of the area. The Swede forced Kirkland to save low at the near post. Adebayor flashed the follow up across goal. Camara curled a fierce drive just over by way of response.

Adebayor nearly flicked a shot past Kirkland in the 86th minute.

Two minutes later he finally breached the Wigan goal.
