Sources close to the club insist the partnership is not the first step towards another American takeover but just involves a technical link-up between Arsenal and the Major League Soccer team.

The Gunners will send coaches over to Colorado while promising players from the US side will be given the chance to train with the Arsenal team.

Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein is understood to be in the USA at the moment and a news conference has been called by the American club.

The Rapids will also be using Arsenal's London Colney training ground as their base for a pre-season tour of England from March 8 to 13.

The MLS club are owned by billionaire American Stan Kroenke but there is no suggestion that Arsenal's shareholders are looking to sell their stake to him.

Arsenal already have a similar tie-up with Belgian side Beveren, from whom they signed Ivory Coast defender Emmanuel Eboue. A number of Arsenal players have gone on loan to Beveren too.

Rosicky: Czech player of the Year

Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky has been named Czech Republic Player of the Year. It is the third time the 26-year-old, known as 'Little Mozart' in his homeland, has captured the honour.

Rosicky previously won the award in 2001 and 2002 and modestly suggested that Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech should have pipped him to the prize after battling back from a serious head injury.

"Cech deserved to win for all he has had to overcome," said Rosicky.

The Czech star believes he has improved since completing his move from Borussia Dortmund to Arsenal last summer.

"I did not play badly at Dortmund but I needed the transfer to get better," said Rosicky. "I settled quickly in the Arsenal line-up and that is a mental boost for every player.

"I am a completely different man to when I first won this award in 2001. I have grown up, although I probably still look like a child because of my baby face."

Arsenal FC striker Robin van Persie is a major doubt for both legs of the Gunners' UEFA Champions League second round tie against PSV Eindhoven after breaking a metatarsal bone in his right foot.

'Partial fracture'
The Netherlands international sustained the "partial fracture" while scoring the equaliser for Arsenal in their 2-1 comeback win against Manchester United FC in the Premiership on Sunday. An x-ray after the game confirmed his fifth metatarsal had been damaged and he is likely to be out of action for at least six weeks.

Premiership: Arsenal v Manchester United - Preview

"In our mind it's a game that we want absolutely to win, I tell you," said Arsène Wenger with a steely stare at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

"We love to win, we want to reduce the gap to Manchester United as quickly as possible and we want to continue our run because we're in good form. We're still involved in nearly every competition, even the championship, and you never know what can happen."

If Premiership fixtures between Arsenal and Manchester United have lost some of their intensity in recent years then it appears that no one as told this particular Frenchman.

It is now two-and-a-half seasons since either of these two pillars of the Premiership have taken the title. In the intervening years Chelsea have dominated domestic honours and even Liverpool have scooped Europe’s top prize.

Despite his opening salvo, Wenger did admit this particular fixture is not quite the be-all and end-all it used to be.

"I feel the fact that Chelsea came in took a little bit of the focus off Arsenal and Manchester United," said Wenger. "Before the last two years a game between Manchester United and Arsenal was a game nobody could afford to lose.

"Now even if you lose one there is still Chelsea there and then Liverpool joined in so there is less focus only on Manchester United and Arsenal."

You only have to look back to the first game between these sides this season for an illustration. Arsenal went to Old Trafford in September without Thierry Henry, any decent form and, it would seem, much chance of victory.

They pulled off a wonderful 1-0 win but it was Manchester United who kicked-on after that. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side flourished despite losing a must-win game and Wenger's men have had to play catch-up.

Arsenal’s ankle injuries are likely to have healed by Sunday — Emmanuel Eboue is certainly back, Robin van Persie should follow suit after a test on Saturday. However Freddie Ljungberg (hamstring) and William Gallas (thigh) are still out while Gilberto is suspended.

Throughout his media work on Friday, Wenger skirted the issue of the title race. It was like he wanted to suggest a victory on Sunday could open a fissure in the rockface of United’s lead but, ever the economist, the Arsenal manager knew the figure of 15 points was set in stone.

Twice he was asked who would win the title, each time he replied: "I have an idea in my head but if I give you my idea you won’t believe me."

"I cannot say we will," he added later, "because we are 15 points behind Manchester United. But I think we have the ingredients and potential to become the best team.

"At the moment we are not because we cannot deny we lost at Sheffield United, Bolton, Manchester City. Even if they are games we could and should have won.

"But this is a good opportunity for us to close the gap a little bit. They've had the advantage of having stability and players in form at the right moment, but it's still not over. Don't forget they must go to Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Portsmouth. They have a difficult schedule."

Portsmouth have signed Arsenal full-back Lauren on a two-and-a-half year contract, with Harry Redknapp hailing him a 'great athlete'.

The Cameroon international, who turns 30 on Friday, has joined for an undisclosed fee, ending his six-and-a-half-year stay with the Gunners.

Pompey boss Redknapp told the club's official website: "Lauren is an outstanding player.

"He is a great athlete and professional, very strong and quick, too.

"He will be a tremendous asset to us, is extremely versatile and can play in a number of different positions at the back and in midfield."

Redknapp revealed he was not the only manager interested in a player who won two Premiership titles and three FA Cups at Arsenal.

"I'm delighted he's decided to join Portsmouth above a whole host of clubs that were after him. It shows how far we have come in a short space of time."

Lauren, who will go straight into the squad for Saturday's home game with Charlton, added: "This is a great move for me.

"Portsmouth are having a great season and are pushing for a place in Europe and I aim to be playing my part in that challenge.

"I have been very impressed with the club's plans for the future, both on and off the pitch, and this was why I chose to come to Fratton Park.

"It will also be good to once again team up with [former Arsenal team-mates] Sol Campbell and Kanu."

Lauren also spoke of his sadness to leave the Gunners.

"I have made many great friends and have many wonderful memories from the years I have spent at Arsenal. I have enjoyed great success with the club and I am very grateful to Arsene Wenger, my team-mates and all the fantastic Arsenal fans for their support. The fans have been brilliant," he said.

"Of course I am sad to be leaving Arsenal, but I am very much looking forward to a new challenge at Portsmouth."

Wenger paid tribute to the full-back and said: "Lauren's contribution to Arsenal since he joined the club in 2000 has been absolutely outstanding.

"He has been a central figure in the club winning the Premiership twice and the FA Cup three times and his high level of performances have made sure that he will always have a place in Arsenal history.

"On behalf of the players and staff we wish Lauren the best of luck at Portsmouth."

Wenger Explains Departure: Arsene Wenger feels he had to allow veteran full-back Lauren to leave in order to continue the development of Emmanuel Eboue and Justin Hoyte.

While accepting his decision was something of a "paradox" given he often suggests the current squad lacks some experience, Wenger felt it served to protect the future of the club.

The Arsenal manager said: "I lost a fantastic player. I would like to pay tribute to him because he was amazing for the club.

"Lauren was not only a player with quality and experience, but also a fantastic guy who was mentally very strong.

"But he was out for nine months. Eboue and Hoyte played.

"Do I stop their development and play Lauren? Or do I let him go somewhere else? I had to make that kind of decision.

"If I played him I would have to lose either Hoyte or Eboue, which I did not want to do."

Wenger maintains his emerging squad have the "ingredients and potential" to consistently challenge for top honours.

He said: "We have the ingredients and potential to become the best team.

"At the moment we are not because we lost at places like Sheffield United, Bolton and Manchester City - even though they are games we could and should have won. But we are getting there."

6th Goal: The game enters the second half with the homeside trailing by 3 goals. 10 minutes into it and Aliadiere is tripped by Hyypia in the penalty area and Baptista comes up to take the spot kick and chance to complete his Hatrick but Dudek stops it this time. Liver goes on the attack again then Fabregas known for his vision on the Football pitch spots Ali in the last third and gives a curling lobbed pass from defence to attack. Ali showing great control and quality gives a square ball to Baptista and he fired in a low shot into the corner from outside the box to complete his hatrick. Arsenal lead 1-5.

7th Goal: Liverpool had still something to show their home fans. Xabi Alonso took the free kick
from 50 yards away and sends it to Hyppia on the left of goal who heads it to Paletta who then
sets up a volley for who else but Steven Gerrard and he doesnt miss those. Liverpool scores 2-5.

8th Goal: Liverpool were attacking with Xabi and Gerrard in the midfeild. Paletta got the ball
on the left flank and crossed it in to Hyypia who headed it past Almunia. Liverpool 3-5.

9th Goal: Red Devils were on the attack one more goal and they could be in the fight again. But
not to be Aliadiere got to the byline again and squared for Baptista again. The Brazilian scored his fourth to end Liverpool's resistance. Match ends with Arsenal winning 3-6. complete his hatrick. Arsenal lead 1-5.

Carling Cup: Liverpool 3- 6 Arsenal

No, you didn't mis-read the scoreline. It really did finish Liverpool 3 Arsenal 6. This was an incredible game and an incredible night for Julio Baptista.

The Brazilian arrived at Anfield without a goal to his name in English football and, some might say, with plenty to prove. He left Merseyside a few hours later with the match ball and an enhanced reputation after his four-goal salvo propelled Arsenal into a Carling Cup Semi-Final showdown with Spurs.

The outstanding Jeremie Aliadiere got the ball rolling in the 26th minute. Robbie Fowler levelled but Baptista curled home a sumptous free-kick to restore Arsenal's lead and added a close-range fourth seconds before the break after Alex Song had also broken his duck. Jerzy Dudek saved Baptista's penalty early in the second half but the Brazilian soon completed his hat-trick. Steven Gerrard and Sami Hyypia scored to hint at a Liverpool comeback but Baptista put the seal on a famous victory with his fourth - and Arsenal's sixth.

Baptista's goals earned the headlines but this performance spoke volumes for the quality and depth of Arsenal's squad. From front to back they were excellent. For Liverpool though this was a humiliation. They haven't conceded six at Anfield for 77 years and are now licking their wounds after two Cup exits at the hands of Arsenal in just four days. Rafa Benitez must be sick of the sight of them.

As expected Arsène Wenger made wholesale changes from the side which won so impressively here in the FA Cup. In came Cesc Fabregas, Baptista, Denilson, Song, Johan Djourou, Aliadiere, Justin Hoyte, Armand Traore and Theo Walcott. Manuel Almunia kept his place in goal while Toure took the captain's armband for the first time in the absence of Thierry Henry and Gilberto. And on the bench sat Henri Lansbury, a 16-year-old who joined Arsenal's academy at the age of nine.

With Liverpool equally unrecognisable from the side which succumbed on Saturday, it took a while for the game to get going. In fact much of the opening stages were taken up by a nasty injury to Mark Gonzalez, who was stretchered off after a seemingly innocuous tackle on Fabregas.

The Spaniard's misfortune made for a muted atmosphere around Anfield, in stark contrast to the booming noise which accompanied Saturday's tie. The home fans were even quieter after Aliadiere gave Arsenal the lead.

Toure showed good vision to pick out the French striker's diagonal run, Aliadiere beat the offside trap and a fantastic first touch gave him the chance to test Dudek as the keeper rushed out. His first effort bounced off Dudek's chest but Aliadiere rolled in the loose ball. One-nil to the Arsenal.

Until then Liverpool had been the better side. Stephen Warnock looked sharp on the left and tested Almunia with a handful of whipped crosses. Craig Bellamy, offering the pace the home side lacked on Saturday, looked menacing. Gerrard lashed a low shot straight at Almunia and Toure made a vital interception after Bellamy and Danny Guthrie linked up well on the right.

Given their early pressure, it was no great surprise when Liverpool equalised five minutes after falling behind. Song was penalised - somewhat unfairly - for a tackle on Fowler, Fabio Aurelio fired in the free-kick, Almunia parried, Luis Garcia showed good presence of mind to cut the ball back and Fowler netted his 12th goal in 16 games against Arsenal with a cheeky backheel.

Arsenal had to dig in as Gerrard took a brief grip in midfield but six minutes before the break the visitors restored their advantage. Aliadiere won a free kick 25 yards out; Baptista and Toure plotted while the Liverpool wall formed. Dudek, apparently expecting a piledriver from the Arsenal captain, shuffled to his left. Baptista curled the ball into the net to the keeper's right. Not a bad way to open your account.

Wenger would have taken a 2-1 lead at the break. In the event his team led 4-1, scoring twice in the six minutes of stoppage time which was added on, ironically, because of Gonzalez's injury. Song grabbed Arsenal's third in fortuitous fashion as Hyypia's attempted clearance bounced in off the midfielder after Fabregas' corner had cleared a bunch of players at the near post.

Then, in the final seconds of the first half, Aliadiere broke the offside trap again and sensibly squared the ball for Baptista. The Brazilian tapped in and the away fans celebrated again, hardly believing what was unfolding in front of them.

Baptista, finally showing the promise which tempted Wenger to bring him to Emirates Stadium, had a chance to complete his hat-trick 10 minutes into the second half after Aliadiere had been tripped by Hyypia. Dudek, who knows a thing or two about saving spot-kicks, pushed Baptista's penalty away. But the Brazilian was soon celebrating again. Aliadiere, growing in confidence with every minute, picked out Baptista with a fizzing pass and he fired low into the corner. An hour gone, and Arsenal were 5-1 up. Incredible.

By now Benitez had brought on Xabi Alonso and the Spaniard, alongside Gerrard, started to exert his authority in midfield. It wasn't long before the Liverpool comeback began. With 67 minutes on the clock Hyypia headed the ball into the Arsenal box. It was half-cleared and a fortunate ricochet took it into the path of Gerrard, lurking on the edge of the area. The England midfielder executed a perfect volley to give Liverpool hope.

That hope turned to something approaching expectation when Hyypia nodded in Gabriel Paletta's cross with 11 minutes left. Surely Arsenal couldn't throw this away? No, they couldn't. With seven minutes left Aliadiere got to the byline again and squared for Baptista again. The Brazilian scored again to end Liverpool's resistance.

So, six goals, a place in the Carling Cup Semi-Finals and, just as importantly, a substitute appearance from Abou Diaby after eight months on the sidelines with a fractured and dislocated ankle. It was good to see the Frenchman back and he looked assured during his nineteen-minute cameo.

But the night belonged to Baptista. As the Anfield crowd streamed out at the final whistle, a recent hit by The Automatic was played over the tannoy: "What's that coming over the hill, is it a monster?". Not exactly. It was The Beast.

Five Finals, four triumphs and three other near misses - Arsène Wenger has enjoyed something of a love affair with the FA Cup since arriving in England a decade ago.

His latest dalliance with the famous old trophy begins on Saturday with a trip to Anfield and some have suggested that Wenger will flirt rather more openly with the FA Cup this season now Arsenal trail Manchester United by 15 points in the Premiership. The Frenchman denies it is his primary focus but he is determined as ever to lift the trophy.

"We still have the Premiership to focus on, we have the Champions League and don't forget that's not a small cup, but we want to win the FA Cup because traditionally we have always been there," said Wenger at his pre-match press conference.

"Domestically we have the Carling Cup as well but we have decided to go for every game we play until the end of the season with a desire to win it, whatever the competition."

Desire is one of many ingredients Arsenal will need to overcome a Liverpool side which, ironically, has been resurgent ever since they crumbled to a 3-0 defeat at Emirates Stadium in November.

Rafa Benitez's side have been imperious at Anfield, where their unbeaten run now stretches to 20 games in all competitions. Steven Gerrard has found his form after a post-World Cup dip and Liverpool's defence has rediscovered its stubborn streak.

"It would be a bit pretentious to say we will beat them 3-0 again," admitted Wenger, "but we are good at the moment and we do know we can beat them while they will try to take revenge.

"We start with a big draw and sometimes that isn't bad because it gets you to focus straight away. There is no time to warm up [in the competition], you have to be at your best straight away and that's what we want on Saturday.

"Because it is a Cup tie and it is at Liverpool I expect a very exciting game. We will try to play, they will try to play and certainly it will be a game to watch."

Wenger has occasionally used the FA Cup to rest some of his bigger names but, this year, he has the luxury of giving some household names much-needed match time as a raft of players return from injury.

Thierry Henry returned from a five-week absence in style on Tuesday night, scoring one goal and making two more in a 4-0 win against Charlton. Emmanuel Eboue and Julio Baptista are back in the squad for Saturday's trip north and the likes of William Gallas, Theo Walcott, Lauren and Abou Diaby are all close to comebacks of their own. In fact, only Emmanuel Adebayor (thigh) and Freddie Ljungberg (hamstring) are still carrying injuries.

"If you ask me about Saturday it will be a team very, very close to the one which played the last game against Charlton," confirmed Wenger. "We will have a strong side."

So is the Frenchman still in love with the FA Cup after all these years? "I am," he smiles. "And there is another attraction this year because it is the first time back at Wembley." Don't bet against Wenger going all the way once again.

Gunners will be facing the blades for their return trip.

Arsène Wenger has been hit by a host of injuries and a virus ahead of the trip to Sheffield United.

Emmanuel Adebayor (thigh) and Johan Djourou (hamstring) picked up injuries in the 2-1 win at Watford on Boxing Day. Theo Walcott has a back problem while Alex Hleb hurt his shin in training on Friday. Meanwhile Thierry Henry (hamstring), Freddie Ljungberg (hamstring), William Gallas (thigh), Emmanuel Eboue (ankle) are still out.

In addition the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Jeremie Aliadiere, Alex Song and Julio Baptista have colds but they are in the squad. As a consequence Denilson and Lauren are likely to be on the bench for the first time in the Premiership this season.

A well-crafted 83rd minute goal from Robin van Persie gave Arsenal all three points at Watford on Boxing Day — but Arsène Wenger’s side were made to work all the way.Gilberto nodded the visitors in front after 19 minutes however the lead lasted only four minutes as Tommy Smith swept home from close range.Both sides had chances after that but by far the greater quality came from Arsenal. Watford keeper Ben Foster added to his blossoming reputation on one of his busier afternoons.Desperation was just starting to take hold when Theo Walcott sent Van Persie sprinting through on the right. He cut inside Jay DeMerit and curled a left-foot effort into the far corner. It is fast becoming his trademark strike.

It certainly extracted Arsenal from a difficult situation this afternoon. This was a forget-the-performance and look-at-the-result kind of game. They move back up to third in the Premiership table.Arsenal were unchanged from the side that had beaten Blackburn so handsomely at Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The retention of Alex Hleb and Tomas Rosicky for an away game suggested Wenger intended to ‘outpass’ the Premiership’s bottom side.Vicarage Road is tight, traditional football stadium. Its devotees expected maximum effort and energy from the side, even though it had brought them precious few points until now.

In addition, Watford are favourites to go down this season while Wenger claims Arsenal are still gunning for the title. Throw in the traditional fervour of a Boxing Day fixture and you had the recipe for a bit of a Christmas cracker. And that is the way it turned out.After three minutes Hameur Bouazza stormed down the left, cut inside Johan Djourou and forced an early save. By way of reply Van Persie forced a fine shot from Watford keeper Ben Foster at the near post.Dan Shittu nodded wide from a corner but, midway through the half, Arsenal had taken control of the game and, with it, the lead.They created a gaggle of chances. Foster made a replica save, only this time from Fabregas. Watford could not clear the ball and Van Persie rifled a shot beyond the far post. The Dutchman then volleyed viciously at Foster and the on-loan Manchester United keeper made a fine low save. However Van Persie had tugged Jay DeMerit in order to get the shot away.In the 18th minute Djourou erred and Ashley Young slipped through. Fortunately, Gilberto was on sentry duty and slid in to smother the shot at source. Seconds later the Brazilian put Arsenal ahead.Rosicky flung a corner to the near post, Toure touched it on and the unmarked midfielder hammered home a header from close range.It seemed that Arsenal would kick on from here. However, almost immediately, Young’s optimistic yet well-flighted flick forced the backtracking Lehmann to palm the ball aside.Then in the 23rd minute Bouazza fled down the left and another Toure touch diverted the ball to Smith eight-yards out. The former England Under-21 striker swept the ball past Lehmann with gusto.

Understandably the home fans were buoyed by the goal but the visitors came back strong before the break. They never broke through the home defence but their constant probing stretched their every sinew.In the 33rd minute Toure clipped the ball through and the leaping Adebayor sent a swivelling shot high over the bar.Then Van Persie powered through on the left but Foster cut out his low cross in the six-yard box. In the dying seconds Fabregas drove forward on left but slashed his shot well wide.However the final chance fell to Alhassan Bangura who thumped a snapshot just past Lehmann’s left-hand upright.Senderos replaced Djourou at the break and Arsenal re-doubled their efforts after the re-start. Rosicky outpaced his marker on the left and forced a flying save from Foster at the near post.The Czech midfielder then tried to feed the galloping Adebayor but Shittu slid in expertly on the edge of the area and managed to clear the danger.

However the impetus was soon lost. Watford had been dangerous from set-pieces through the game and forced a flurry of corners around the hour.But Arsenal weathered the storm and in the 64th minute Fabregas sent Adebayor clear. He beat his marker and his low shot hit Foster’s legs. The Watford keeper knew little about that save however his stop from Justin Hoyte’s left-foot drive was excellent.Arsenal were going for the win. Clichy dribbled through and fired over just after Theo Walcott came on. Then Julio Baptista trickled an effort inches beyond the far post a minute after his arrival.Adebayor hacked an effort wide then, after Gilberto cleared a corner, Walcott found Van Persie wonderfully. The Dutchman found the far corner in a similar manner. Baptista nearly gave Walcott his first Arsenal goal on a plate at the death but it wasn't to be.

Nonetheless, a little bit of quality, along with a whole heap of grit, had been just enough to take all three points.

His performances with Feyenoord, including his playing an integral part in the 3-2 UEFA Cup final victory over Borussia Dortmund at the De Kuip on May 8, 2002, earned him the prestigious Best Young Talent award given by the KNVB for the 2001-02 season.

As a result of a back injury suffered during the summer of 2002, there was uncertainty as to whether Van Persie could start the new season. Van Persie, however, showed no such worries come the beginning of the season, scoring 8 goals in 28 league games as well as playing twice in the UEFA Champions League. Despite his talent Robin Van Persie had a difficult relationship with the Feyenoord manager Bert van Marwijk, a strict discipliniarian, who sent him home on the eve of the European Super Cup against Real Madrid in Monaco.

With Van Persie's Feyenoord contract due to expire in 2005, a disagreement with Bert van Marwijk combined with the fact that the club had not offered him a new contract meant that he spent most of the following season as a fading light at the club.

English Premiership

English club Arsenal, undeterred by a rebuff during the January 2004 transfer window, made a move for the striker at the end of the 2003-04 season. Van Persie also emerged as a target for Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen, and Spanish side Sevilla. However Arsenal fended off other club interest and signed van Persie, despite already having signed Spanish striker José Antonio Reyes from Sevilla. Van Persie completed his move for a fee believed to be in the range of £3 million, to the Premiership on May 17, 2004. Praised by Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger for the strength of his talent, he made his debut for the team in the 3-1 FA Community Shield victory over rivals Manchester United on August 8, 2004. Early on, he played as a left winger, but he predominantly plays as a striker for Arsenal. He is touted as Arsenal's long-term replacement for his idol Dennis Bergkamp.

He spent most of his time on the bench during earlier parts of the season and looked to have earned himself a permanent place there with his sending off against Southampton which cost Arsenal two points, and caused Wenger to display uncharacteristic anger in public with a player. To his credit, Van Persie redoubled his efforts in training during his suspension and was reintroduced in to the team when injuries to Thierry Henry forced Wenger's hand. His return to the first team has been marked with numerous goals, the pinnacle of his achievements (at that time) coming in the FA Cup semi-final against Blackburn Rovers where he scored two goals to secure victory for Arsenal. He also scored the vital breakthrough goal against West Bromwich Albion to help Arsenal secure second place in the Premiership after the Albion defence had proved difficult to break down. As a result of his good play he won the The Barclay's Premiership Player of the Month.

Van Persie scored in the first game of the 2005-06 season and he continued to show good form, winning the prestigious Player of the Month award in November after scoring six goals in just four starts. So far he has tended to be deployed in an advanced left-wing role in a 4-5-1 formation, rather than as a second striker alongside Thierry Henry, where he had previously established himself for Arsenal. He signed a contract extension keeping him at the North London club until 2011. In the early part of the 2006-07 season, against Charlton Athletic, he scored what turned out to be BBC's Goal of the Month, an airborne volley from the edge of the 18-yard box. Arsène Wenger described it as 'technically perfect'. These and his international performances for his country earned him the title Rotterdam Sportsman of the year 2006.

Robin Van Persie received his first full international cap against Romania on 4th June 2005. Despite not being an automatic first choice to start for Arsenal, Van Persie was selected as one of Holland's forwards for the 2006 FIFA World Cup by national coach Marco Van Basten. His first World Cup goal came in the group match against Côte d'Ivoire, a blistering free kick in the 23rd minute. Despite the Netherlands premature exit out of the world elite competition, Van Persie has forced himself into the first eleven following impressive displays in Germany

During the Euro 2008 qualifiers, van Persie made an instant impact during games against Luxembourg and Belarus. Despite an unconvincing 1-0 win against the central European minnows, Luxembourg, Van Persie was a constant threat surging forwards throughout the match. Yet his performance against the Belarussians surely illustrated why van Basten has handed him the coveted number 7 shirt. Two perfectly struck goals in either halves and a clinical cross to feed Dirk Kuyt helped the Netherlands claim a comfortable 3-0 win. He continued his great form in the next two games, scoring against Bulgaria in a 1-1 draw and also in the 2-1 victory against Albania a few days later.

Van Persie's mother is a teacher and his father an artist. His father brought him up as a single parent. He grew up in a rough neighbourhood of Rotterdam alongside its large immigrant population. He had a series of behavioral problems at school and was often excluded from classes. He is married to Bouchra, a Dutch-Moroccan. They have one child together, a boy named Shaqeel, born on November 16th, 2006. They live in Hampstead, North London. While some sources claim he is a convert to Islam, Van Persie has never disclosed his faith in interviews.

Gunners go to Vicarage Road for their second game of the festive season to play Watford. After their 6-2 demolition of Rovers the gunners look to be having a merry Christmas and heading for a very happy new year. Arsenal got their festive schedule off to the perfect start with a 6-2 thrashing of Blackburn at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners may be trailing Manchester United and Chelsea in the race for the Barclays Premiership title but there were glimpses of what this current crop of talented Gunners can produce as they recovered from conceding an early penalty to complete a comprehensive win.With games against struggling Watford, Sheffield United and Charlton all to come over the next 10 days, there could just be signs 2007 may well turn out to be a vintage year for Arsenal.

It was Rovers, however, who took a shock early lead.Shabani Nonda played in former Gunner David Bentley, who was tussling arm to arm with Kolo Toure and the pair went to ground.Referee Howard Webb was convinced there had been enough contact from the Arsenal defender - who appeared to fall into the path of his old team-mate - and pointed to the spot.Congo striker Nonda, on loan from Roma, confidently stroked the penalty low to the right of Jens Lehmann.Arsenal found themselves trailing to an early goal at home again, and immediately went on the offensive.Robin van Persie drove Emmanuel Adebayor's cut-back from the left just wide of the near post.After 10 minutes, Toure's flicked header looped off the crossbar following a corner on the left.Moments later, the Gunners were level. Van Persie sent over a delivery from the opposite flag - and Gilberto got up above marker Brett Emerton to head past Brad Friedel.Arsenal soon settled into their natural passing game but, after 16 minutes, Lehmann had to be alert to touch over a dipping 30-yard strike from Bentley, the young forward perhaps out to prove a point to his old manager.The Gunners then went ahead with a brilliantly-worked goal from Alexander Hleb. Cesc Fabregas slipped the ball through to Adebayor on the edge of the Blackburn area, and he in turn fed Hleb.The Belorussian midfielder danced around Andy Todd, and then simply rolled the ball past Friedel.Before Rovers had time to regroup, it was 3-1. A delightful flick from Adebayor sent van Persie clear into the six-yard box ahead of Lucas Neill, who promptly pulled him down - although the Dutchman made the most of the contact.Referee Webb pointed to the spot, before then consulting with his assistant as the visitors protested for offside.His decision stood, however, before the Yorkshire official then showed leniency and produced only a yellow card for the Blackburn skipper, when according to the letter of the law it should really have been red.Punishment enough was served, though, when Adebayor netted from 12 yards as he sent Friedel the wrong way after 27 minutes.As half-time approached, Arsenal produced a lightning counter-attack. Tomas Rosicky's quick pass sent Hleb clear down the right, before the midfielder cut inside.However, instead of opting to shoot as space opened up in the box, he tried to square for the on-rushing van Persie - and Todd was able to make a timely interception.Just before the break, there was a warning when Lehmann again had to be at full stretch to save another well-hit, long-range effort from Bentley.

Arsenal looked in control at the start of the second half, and Cesc Fabregas twice went close.His low drive deflected off Neill and went only just wide of Friedel's right-hand post, before the Rovers keeper then did well to deny Fabregas at the near post after the midfielder had cut in from the left as the offside flag stayed down.Arsenal were within inches of moving further ahead when Adebayor's cut-back from the goalline was drilled in by Rosicky - but somehow Andre Ooijer managed to head the ball up against the underside of the crossbar and it flew away to safety.Rovers made a change when Michael Gray was replaced by Matt Derbyshire on 63 minutes - and the substitution soon paid off.A deep cross from the right by Emerton looped over the Arsenal back-line. Derbyshire's diving far-post header bounced back off the bar into the six-yard box - where Nonda was on hand to hook it into the net.Arsenal suddenly looked nervous at the back, with Lehmann turning Morten Gamst Pedersen's snap-shot over with nine minutes left.Van Persie could have made the game safe - but side-footed over from Adebayor's cut-back on the right goalline.The Dutchman then did wrap things up, turning Bentley inside out on the right before dispatching a low strike into the far corner on 85 minutes.Adebayor and Fabregas combined to set-up van Persie for a fifth, before substitute Mathieu Flamini swept in another from close range during stoppage time.

• Wenger hails six-goal Gunners

Arsene Wenger claimed his Arsenal team had played some 'amazing football' during their 6-2 thrashing of Blackburn at the Emirates Stadium.The Gunners recovered from going behind to a third-minute penalty to secure a comfortable victory against Mark Hughes' men, who remain in a scrap at the wrong end of the Barclays Premiership table.Rovers had taken a shock lead on through Shabani Nonda, after Kolo Toure was adjudged to have brought down former Arsenal forward David Bentley.However, Gilberto soon levelled before a brilliantly worked goal from Alexander Hleb put the hosts ahead.Emmanuel Adebayor's spot-kick made it 3-1 before half-time.Although another for Nonda with 20 minutes left looked to have set up a nervous finish, Robin van Persie wrapped the game up with a late double before substitute Mathieu Flamini completed the rout in stoppage time.'Blackburn played and were dangerous going forwards, but I am happy because it was a spirited performance and created some combination play at speed which was absolutely amazing,' said Arsenal manager Wenger.'It is never boring here.'You cannot accuse me a lot, but not of making it boring.'The team played some tremendous and amazing football to watch today.'Blackburn also did well going forwards today and in the end they were punished perhaps a little bit too much.'Wenger added: 'I knew if we could survive their spell of pressure, then we would come out again.'If they had come back to 3-3, that would have been very hard for the team mentally to have dropped two points with the way we played.'The Arsenal manager is convinced his side can go places in 2007.'I have already said I believe we can achieve something this season, but it is down to consistency,' Wenger continued.'We have now put a good little run together and it is just how consistent we can be.'There is great spirit in the team and they enjoy playing together at a high tempo, that is something amazing and very interesting to watch.'They are developing well and the vibes coming out of the team are very positive.'I have a great belief they can go further.
